Top 5 Latina Pride Halloween Costumes

Halloween, that ‘scary’ time of the year – yes, scary as in ‘goblins and ghosts’ – but for some of us, it’s Latina pride wearin’ time. A perfect response to owning our Latinidad in the face of inappropriate costumes that depict our culture in harmful stereotypical ways. It’s 2021 and it still happens!

Some Halloween costumes are culturally insensitive to wear, period. However, with Halloween being the biggest spending holiday of the year, bad options made it to the market. According to USA TODAY article, ‘Mia Moody-Ramirez, director of graduate studies and American studies at Baylor University, says cultural appropriation has long been present in American history, but social media has elevated the awareness of it. In recent years, celebrities have been called out by the public for their use of cultural appropriation for Halloween.’

Latinx are guilty of bad costume choices in the process of exhibiting cultural pride – so it is best, to avoid the harmful, stereotypical caricatures and aim toward positive, cool, inspiring iconic people and things that resonate and showcase our culture beautifully…and sure, may bring out the giggles!

So here are few Latina pride Halloween costume ideas that you may be able to pull off last minute. Represent!
