Halloween, that ‘scary’ time of the year – yes, scary as in ‘goblins and ghosts’ – but for people of color/Latino – it’s a ‘horror’ story of another kind. We are talking about, unbelievable, offensive and culturally inappropriate costumes, when people think it is okay and oh-so-hilarious¬†to dress up, for example as a ‘Mexican’ with stereotypical ‘stache, sombrero and beer bottle, ‘brown’ painted faces…come on! It can be downright offensive!¬†Latinos are guilty of bad costume choices, too, in the process of exhibiting cultural pride – it is best, to avoid the harmful, stereotypical caricatures and aim toward positive, cool, inspiring iconic people and things that resonate and showcase our culture beautifully…and sure, may bring out the¬†giggles!

So here are few Halloween costume ideas that rock the hell out of our Latina pride, the right way ?

1.) Our beloved Pan Dulce or Mazapan

4.) ¡Azucar!

That’s right, nuestra Afro-Latina icon, Celia Cruz. For an extra touch & special effect – sprinkle some¬†sugar (glitter) or the real-deal azucar. #Magic
